American MidWest Newest Frontier for Energy Management Benchmarking
Minneapolis latest U.S. city to move to benchmarking and disclosure to identify opportunities for improving building energy efficiency
The trend towards comprehensive building energy benchmarking and disclosure in the United States continues to gain momentum — with Minneapolis the latest city to require commercial buildings to report energy and water use.
Minneapolis City Council has unanimously passed an ordinance requiring large commercial buildings to report energy and water use starting in 2014. Many major US cities (San Francisco, New York, Seattle, Austin, Washington D.C. to name a few) and several Western European ones have already enacted similar legislation and are reporting large savings in energy and green house gas production.
Energy used in America’s buildings is responsible for almost 8 percent of global carbon emissions and costs Americans more than $500 billion every year — yet most owners and managers have a poor understanding of how energy is used in their buildings.
